The Holcroft property, a part of the original Manor of Livingston, has been in the Livingston family since the mid-1730s. The three-story, red brick mansion was built in 1881 and is owned and managed by members of the Hawkins family. Ancestors include Robert Livingston, who settled in the Hudson River Valley in 1675, and Robert R. Livingston, who was known as “The Chancellor.” He gave the oath of office to President George Washington in 1789, served as President Thomas Jefferson’s minister to France, and co-invented the first commercial steamboat with Robert Fulton.
Holcroft is featured in Life Along the Hudson: The Historic Country Estates of the Livingston Family (Pieter Estersohn, Rizzoli New York, 2018). Follow the “Look Inside” link to the first image after the title to find a two-page spread of the expansive view of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains from Holcroft’s gardens. The eight-page chapter – with seven spectacular photos – on Holcroft begins on page 258.
